World leaders congratulate Aquino



MANILA, Philippines— Members of the international community have welcomed Benigno Aquino III becoming the 15th President of the Philippines.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said: “On behalf of the government and people of Canada, I am honored to congratulate Senator Aquino, president-elect of the Philippines.

Newly-elected British Prime Minister David Cameron said “relations between the United Kingdom and the Philippines are strong, with their shared commitment to democracy and sustainable development.

British Ambassador to the Philippines Stephen Lillie echoed the Prime Minister's congratulatory message, noting the contribution to British society of about quarter of a million Filipinos in the United Kingdom.

US Ambassador Harry K. Thomas Jr. said: “On behalf of the US Embassy, I congratulate President-elect Benigno S. Aquino III and Vice President-elect Jejomar C. Binay on their victories in the May 10 election. We also congratulate the people of the Philippines for carrying out a successful first-ever national automated election.

Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada made the following statement: “Japan hopes that, blessed with the expectations and support of the people of the Philippines expressed through the elections, the new President will actively address the challenges faced by the Philippines and achieve further stability and development.

Chinese Ambassador Liu Jianchao said: “I would like to, on behalf of the Chinese Government and people, convey my sincere congratulations to President Aquino and Vice President Binay. China looks forward to seeing the Philippines continue to enjoy social stability and economic prosperity, and the Philippine people blessed with sustaining happiness under the leadership.
