Woods, playing after missing the cut at the Quail Hollow Championship, has a 141 total after a 1-under 71 in the second round. His total was just a stroke better than the half-way cut that was set at 2-under. Woods needs a better-than-good weekend to have a chance of catching up with Westwood, who is nine strokes up on the world’s top two players, as world number two Phil Mickelson is also at 141.
Closely following Westwood are a group of three composed of Japan’s Ryuji Imada, Francesco Molinari, and Heath Slocum. Westwood said winning TPC would “be incredibly important” as it is “a massive tournament.” His statement was a big shift from his pronouncement last week, when he described TPC as “perhaps the eighth-biggest tournament in the world,” completely contradicting the PGA Tour’s promotion of the $9.5-million championship as the “fifth major.”
