Nokia Sues Apple Over Infringement with iPad, iPhones

The bitter rivalry between Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia Oyj and emerging smartphone leader Apple Inc. is not showing any signs of dissipating. Nokia filed a patent infringement suit against Apple on Friday, saying that the iPhone and iPad were made using the Finnish company’s patented technology.

According to the suit filed in the Federal District Court in the Western District of Wisconsin, the antenna, enhanced speech and data transmission, as well as application positioning data technologies used in Apple’s popular iPad and iPhone are patented by Nokia.

An analyst for Broadpoint AmTech, Brian Marshall, said that at the end of the day, it is possible that the two tech giants would agree to cross licenses for some of their patents as they are “probably ‘borrowing’ each other’s technology to some extent.”

Apple is steadily emerging as the market leader in the smartphone segment, although it entered the cellphone industry only three years ago. Nokia, on the other hand, has been shedding market share due to Apple’s surge.
