Radiation boosts prostate cancer survival: study

CHICAGO – Doctors are reporting a key advance in treating men with cancer that has started to spread beyond the prostate. A study finds that survival is significantly better if they get radiation along with standard hormone treatments.

About 20 percent of men with prostate cancer are like the men in the study. Most are treated with hormone-blocking drugs, but only about half get radiation because of worries about its side effects.

The study of 1,200 men in Canada finds that men were about one-quarter less likely to die within seven years if they received both treatments, and that serious side effects were no more common than if they got hormone blockers alone. Researchers gave the results Sunday at a cancer conference in Chicago.
