Twentieth Century Fox announced that the release of the next X-Men film will be on June 3, 2011.
The movie entitled X-Men: First Class is a prequel that will bring moviegoers to the earlier times when Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr were not yet Professor X and Magneto. It will explore the events that led to their split. It will also focus on the events on the origins of the original X-Men such as Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm and Beast, among others.
No cast has been confirmed but it was announced that Matthew Vaughn will direct the film. Vaughn took the helm of films Layer Cake, Stardust and Kick Ass.
Several sources indicate that production will start this summer.
The film is the fifth in the series. It followed X-Men, X2, X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. All of these previous four films generated a combined worldwide movie ticket sales total of 1.53 billion dollars.
